PRDV203: Introduction to Management

Unit 2: What is Management?   In this unit, you will gain an understanding of basic management theory and the four functions of management that serve as its foundation. Later sections of this course will frequently refer back to these four functions. The second subunit offers a general discussion of managers and their roles.

Unit2 Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this unit, you will be able to: - define the term management; - identify the four functions of management; - recognize managerial activities and roles; and - recognize types of managers.

2.1 What Is Management?   - Reading: Principles of Management: “Chapter 1: Introduction,” “Section 2: Who Are Managers?” and “Section 4: Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling” Link: Principles of Management (PDF): “Chapter 1: Introduction,” “Section 1: Who Are Managers?” and “Section 3: Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling”
 
Instructions: Read the introduction and Section 1, “Who Are Managers?” in Chapter 1 on pages 2-9 for a general overview of management. Then read Section 3, “Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling,” on pages 15-20.
 
Reading these sections should take approximately 30 minutes.

Instructions: Review the introduction and “Who Are Mangers?” sections in Chapter 1 of Principles of Management. These selections explain who managers are, what they do, and the roles they play in an organization. Perform the exercises on page 8.
